Third Circuit Court of Appeals: Judge Luis Felipe Restrepo
For the last year, the primary focus of WCM-PA’s work was on pushing the confirmation of Judge Luis Felipe Restrepo to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior to finally being confirmed in late January of 2016–after being held up for more than a year–Judge Restrepo had served on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Judge Restrepo was nominated back in November of 2014, on the bipartisan recommendation of both of Senator Bob Casey and Pat Toomey. He was an incredibly well-qualified nominee with a background as a public defender and son of first-generation Americans.
With Judge Restrepo confirmed, we are now focused on pressuring Senator Toomey to insist that his Republican colleagues address the six other federal court vacancies in Pennsylvania. As these judicial seats remain unfilled, Pennsylvanians suffer. Cases are delayed and judges are overworked. With nominees for four of these six vacancies, it should not be a difficult task for the Senate to do their job and fill these seats in 2016.
